Formed in early 2010 by then audio engineer Carl Conway-Davis and then Hip-Hop producer Pat Dooner, The Broken Orchestra began as an experiment, an ambitious way to learn but mainly as a creative output. Over ten years on and those fundamental aspects still remain, even if those initial roles have shifted somewhat.

Thirteen years of creativity, expansion and development has seen The Broken Orchestra morph into more than just a music production duo.

Inspired by movie soundtracks, lo-fi organic sounds, natural textures and musical tones, the pair write emotive, layered atmospheric music. Most recently they are fascinated with new ways of presenting music in meaningful ways, in particular with new technology in public space.

Creating sound tracks for landscapes, audio walking tours, radio dramas, sci fi adventures, The Broken Orchestra also perform live as a band, release music into the world on physical and digital formats; and have a keen interest in presenting music in spatial and immersive sound.

As a band they have received air play from the likes of BBC Introducing’s Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 6 Music. They have played live in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including Hare and Hounds (Birmingham), Band on the Wall (Manchester), HIFI Club (Leeds) and Hoochie Coochie (Newcastle).

Extremely proud of our hometown of Hull they have been supported extensively by local partners such as BBC Introducing Humberside and Humber Street Sesh and have been lucky enough to have been commissioned to work with such brilliant festivals as Freedom Festival Arts Trust, Hull Jazz Festival and BBC Contains Strong Language.

Collaboration and experimentation have been at the forefront of their work over the last thirteen years. They have a keen interest in presenting music in different ways and have created soundtracks for projects on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 3 as well as creating the RE:SCORE project with the British Film Institute, Yorkshire Film Archive and Film Hub North. 2023 also see’s them join the European funded IN-SITU network to present work in public space.
